AND TODAY...

I wasn’t wrong about it being a busy week, or maybe it just seemed that way because I was alone at the office. Not that there was a multitude of calls, but anyone doing accounting will tell you that interruptions often cause you to go right back to the beginning once you return to those columns of numbers. It takes a few minutes to find your concentration – then the phone rings again, LOL! In spite of being continuously occupied, at the end of most days I couldn’t put my finger on what, if anything, was actually completed.

My associate has not yet returned, so the future of the companies is still up in the air. He usually does land on his feet in his ventures, and seems confident that this time will be no exception. The numerous and unforeseen delays keep us all on tenterhooks. It is supposed to be resolved by the end of next week, but the deadline has been changed so often now that I’m resigned to just waiting it out – and whatever happens will happen. In the meantime, evenings have been used to gather information we’ll need to acquire and open our home-away-from-homes for seniors. Later this morning I’ll be meeting the real estate agent and a civil engineer at one of the houses we are considering as a purchase. It’s a beautiful, huge, old residence, ideally situated but, because of its age, the basics (plumbing, wiring, well and septic tank, etc.) need to be thoroughly inspected before making an offer.

A little note about the young real estate agent. When he first showed us the place, we discovered that there are two elderly men who are still living there. Because the owner’s husband passed away last year, and she herself had a stroke shortly after, the other six seniors had been relocated elsewhere. We were discussing how we could set things up; where to put the elevated gardens (to avoid a lot of bending); the common room, the parking space for visitors, and so on. The agent stood listening, then asked me how much we were planning to charge each resident. When I told him the rate we were thinking of, he looked genuinely worried. With questioning, I learned that the two men still there were paying slightly less. The agent feared that we would make them move away from what has been their home for the past couple of years. His empathy was surprising; these men are strangers to him. Warming to him immediately, we both assured him that things could be worked out; no-one would be forced to move. Needless to say, his attitude won our respect. It was one of those unexpected bright spots in our day.

And another bright spot for this day – later this afternoon I’ll be babysitting two of my grandsons. The youngest will be going to the family supper with the parents, because mommy is breast-feeding (Nope! Granny can’t do much there!), but I’ll get to play with Nalou and Bali for a few hours. I imagine I’ll have a lot to talk about tomorrow!

I’m going out to watch the sunrise now. The doggies are standing in the window giving me the ‘What’s taking you so long?’ look.

Hoping you have a good weekend, full of interesting moments and many SMILES!

MORPHÉE'S ABSENCE

I did not sleep one wink last night. Damn! It’s bad enough when I get only a couple of hours in, but nothing for the whole night? I’m going to be a waste case at the office today, and it’s really not the time for it. GRRRR!

I have good news on two fronts. The first is that the PET scan showed only scar tissue on Bird’s lymph nodes, not tumours as they had suspected. An enormous relief!! The second is that today is my oldest son’s special day, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOW!! But don’t even think about asking your mom out to supper to celebrate with you. She’ll be running home and into bed straight after work!!!

Bird and I got back from the hospital around 2:30 yesterday. After I dropped him home, I stopped in to see Jo’s family. The 3 boys were awake, and Jo is on vacation, and May is on parental leave, so I got to spend time with the whole crew for few moments. At the risk of repeating myself, nothing is as sweet as cuddling a grandchild. I got plenty from each of them, and together with Bird’s good news, it made my day.

The doggies were happy to have me home early. We walked around to check on the apple trees (yep – we’ve got some!) and did the tour of the land. Lucas joined us, of course. I carry a long stick around with me just in case she decides to fight with Bud again, but she has been listening very well lately. She’s maturing, is more obedient – and a beautiful animal!

There is forever housecleaning to do, then I went through some papers that have been lying around my home office for ages. I gave up before finishing the piles, but did make some headway, so that was encouraging. I had a story to finish for Blog-it, chatted for 30 minutes or so to the nurse who works for our agency (but is presently on CSST), then ate a huge spinach salad before relaxing in the Jacuzzi. My plan was an early bedtime, to be in good shape this morning. That didn’t happen. I tried reading, writing, cleaning some more, then just relaxing, then reading again…... Nope! Every little sound outside disturbed me. I watched the sun rise, and THEN I began to feel a little sleepy. Bah! Humbug!

It’s 6 AM now, so I’ll just get dressed and go ahead into the city. I expect I’ll be making use of that futon in my office before day’s end. Oh, well. Everything happens for a reason, so I’ll just SMILE and get on with it. Have a great day, people!!

ME VS GARAGE DOOR

That storm knocked out the electricity here in the bush – it was off most of the morning, then again from about 6 PM to 11-something- PM. Except for the pump not working, therefore no water, I really don’t mind the lack of hydro for short bursts. I’m used to it, and have a generator to back up if it’s off too long. Yesterday morning did present an amusing problem though. I was just on my way out the door, heading for work, when I realized that my garage door would have to be opened manually.

Ummm…okay. I know how it’s done. Except I’d always just watched while it was being done; not had to do it myself. It’s not a complicated process, but the door is heavy, and kept stopping about ¾ of the way up. Not quite high enough to get my truck under it. It wouldn’t take much to send it the rest of the way, but I’m short, and couldn’t exert enough muscle power while standing on the tips of my toes. I tried using a large broom to push it higher. That didn’t work either; it kept sliding back down. I finally succeeded by finding a stepladder, placing it as close to the door as I could, gingerly climbing halfway up, and giving an almighty shove, which sent me and ladder rocking and nearly crashing to the cement floor. I’m pretty sure my facial expressions during this exercise would have made it onto Home’s funniest Videos, LOL. I told my daughter about it when I saw her later, and that night my youngest son showed up at the house to tighten the coils of the door. Now I can practically use just one hand to send that bugger flying up there! HA! Me, Jane!!!

Ah, and the bonus was that my son was accompanied by my two little grandsons (the third, our new-born, was at home with mummy). The four of us, surrounded by doggies, walked a way down the lane. I correct that – Bali RAN down the gravel lane, then back up the steep hill, as fast and as wobbly as three-year-old legs could take him. What a character! And what energy!! And what nice kisses and hugs M’mère got as they piled into the car to go home. Gotta love it!

When the boys were gone, I drove up to see Suzie, who is home from Detroit. She fed me, then we sat outside in the mountain air and chatted like old friends do until 11PM, the hour at which the electricity was supposed be restored, according to the Hydro-Quebec hot-line. It still wasn’t on when I got home (dark is really DARK in the bush!!!) but did start shortly after, so it was Jacuzzi time. I managed a whole 3 hours of shut-eye, then was checking out Facebook at 3 AM. I’m beginning to wonder if my insomnia isn’t timed to coincide with the full moon. Maybe I was a werewolf in a former life? There’s much going on at the moment, but the sleep problem exists even when things are calm. The positive side is that one gets to admire a lot of sunrises – and some of them are astounding. So, sleepy or not, I’m still SMILING…sending it out to you…keep it going!
